Why the Toro
GDC System is the
Best Choice
Toro GDC Advantages over the IC Decoder
The Toro GDC System is the most proven, most durable and flexible decoder system available for golf irrigation
designs.  The Toro GDC System was the first to introduce latching technology for longer cable runs, easy
expandability and lower installed cost than traditional systems.  With over three and a half years of experience and
more than 175 courses around the world, the Toro GDC System is the best choice in decoder systems.
The Toro GDC system is the most
flexible, proven and durable
decoder system in golf irrigation.
Since 2006, over 175 golf courses
throughout the world have counted
on the Toro GDC System for their
irrigation needs.

Electrical Specifications
Depending on many factors, including designer preference, geography
and weather, the irrigation system design will fall in to one of two
categories:  Looped or Herringbone Lateral Piping Style. Traditionally, the
control system wiring follows the placement of the lateral piping as this is
the most convenient path. There are three possible wiring options when
using GDC:
Maximum number of wire paths:

Recently, Rain Bird introduced a “copy

new control system for golf irrigation.
While many have believed this claim,
irrigation experts agree that the Rain
Bird IC is nothing more than a decoder
system where the decoder is attached
to the solenoid and located at the
sprinkler.  Although this format gives
the IC Decoder some advantages

1.  Stay with looped laterals –The GDC design will be the same as the
IC Decoder design.  This option has some, but the fewest advantages
for Toro in user benefits, sales points and system cost.

3.  Change piping to Herringbone laterals/Maintain Herringbone
lateral piping- This design offers the same control effectiveness as
the other two options, but with substantial additional benefits and
potential cost savings.  This is by far the best outcome and will provide
the client with the best system while giving Toro the most advantages
in both feature/benefits and price.
Toro Golf Irrigation has the resources
to help you make the most of the Toro
GDC System.  From design guides to
spec sheets to troubleshooting, we
are here to help.  The following pages
contain details and guidelines about
the GDC Designs which work best with
each of the two system styles.  There are
many variables that must be taken into
account, so your design requirements
and options may vary.  Refer to the
design recommendations as needed.

Endorse Herringbone Style Design
Rain Bird will work to ensure that the design of the system is looped
lateral style.  If this is the case, you should do everything in your power
to switch the design to Herringbone or an off-fairway control system
design and take full advantage of the features of the Toro GDC System.
If the system is Herringbone, you can generate a pro-Toro design, but be
prepared to defend against the competition’s effort to change it.

What If the Design Can’t Be Changed?
Don’t worry, the Toro GDC System still offers advantages over the IC
Decoder when the design is looped laterals.  The following pages outline
two possible design styles that will take advantage of the GDC features
without having to change the pipe layout.  In addition, having a Toro
system means that the customer also gets other advantages including
superior surge protection and the best sprinkler in the industry.
