Sharpening the Blade
Note: For the best performance, install a new blade before
the cutting season begins. During the year, file down any
small nicks to maintain the cutting edge.
File the top side of the blade to maintain its original cutting
angle (Fig. 21A) and inner cutting edge radius (Fig. 21B).
The blade will remain balanced if you remove the same
amount of material from both cutting edges.

Glen on Jun 04, 2018. After 14 years, still no complaints

I bought for this for ~$625USD in the spring of 2004. It was the higher (by $25-$50) price of many stores, but it came w/ free shipping & an electric trimmer (I gave that away years later without ever using it). I was pretty excited to get it b/c it was the first full-feature "push" mower I had owned. I had to assembly it a bit as it arrived in a box. Nothing hard in the assembly.
I've been a moderate user on average. I mowed ~3000 sqft of lawn for 2 seasons, 5000 sqft for 5 seasons and 8K sqft for 5 years. In the last 2 seasons, it is a back up mower, but it has been used every season even if a couple of times. Growing season here is about 25 times a season. (figure hours are [.5hr*2+.75*5+1*5]*25+few more*2 = 250hours )
The mower worked flawlessly for years. I mostly let the grass fly. The chute did not allow for the clipping to disperse very well. The clippings had to travel 180degrees to get out; too much distance to travel. (bad design) There tended to be a visible clippings trail unless the clippings were very light. It mulched best for an average stand of grass, but I liked to let it fly. So I used the chute exclusively til it broke. I eventually worn the thing out. With time and use, the stabilizing tabs worn thin and it would not sit right on the exit. This was perhaps 9 years of use. A new one was ~$80 so I just went to mulch.
It is a good bagging unit also. It has all the required power to mulch or bag. Hills are not an issue for the unit until the wheels have no more traction. That does happen. I finally got new wheels this year.
Control of the unit is fine. It is a bit light or has too small of wheels for bumpy lawns. It is a touch heavy to carry around but not too bad. I can still handle it myself in and out of the pick-up truck bed. Drive speed is on point. If it could be different, I'd say faster. Run time of a full tank of gas is ~1 hour, perhaps a touch more.
The engine has started in 2 or 3 pulls, as advertised, for all of time. The only maintenance items I did were change oil 1x a season, change the air filter and sharpen the blade. The first item of wear was the chute, they the deck broke at the front wheel pivot mount, the handle and finally the drive belt. All were fixed in some manner save the handle which I have dealt with.
The paint has faded and/or scratched and the blade is getting thin. There is no rust on the unit!!! The deck has no other cracks to speak of as I know it. Should I choose to send $60 to "freshen" the look and replace the worn but still functional parts, I could have a "good as new" mower.
I could definitely recommend purchasing this mower from a honest man if you have the chance and are mostly a bagger or mulcher. I would buy again if it suited my current needs.
