Pull outward on the lower housing cover handle to
remove. Locate the battery clip and attach it to the
battery terminals.

The ECx timer features the ability to be fully programmed
before installation. Installing its 9-volt battery brings the
ECx to life, so you can program your new timer while in
the comfort of your home.
2. Insert the battery into the timer housing as shown in
Figure 1.

Slide the battery switch (14) to the left (ALK) for Alka-
line or right (RCHG) to activate the Ni-MH battery
charging circuit. See Figure 2.

The ECx can use either type of 9-volt battery: Alkaline or
rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH). The Alkaline
battery provided will keep the timer’s clock and program-
mable memory functioning for about 72 hours and should
be replaced every year. A fully-charged Ni-MH battery will
last about 24 hours, but is continuously recharged to pro-
vide service for many years.

If your home has frequent power interruptions, installing a
rechargeable Ni-MH battery is recommended.
Note: The battery does not supply power to operate the
zone control valves; power from the transformer must be
supplied.
Caution: The battery charger switch must be set
correctly. Damage to the controller can result from
an Alkaline battery which may fail if charged.
WARNING:

Press the +/ON button to stop the display from flash-
ing. The colon (:) will continually flash while displaying
the time and during watering operation.
Always replace battery with the same or equivalent
type. Dispose of used batteries according to the
battery manufacturer’s recommendations.
