Replacing the Starter Rope
and Rewind Spring

Use a screwdriver to pry the rope
out of the starter grip.
Replacing a broken starter rope
Remove the remaining rope from
the rotor and starter grip.

Take out the screws (1).
N

Thread the new rope through the
starter grip and tie one of the special
knots shown.
Remove the fan housing from the
crankcase.

Thread the rope through the top of
the guide bushing (5).
Pull the knot back into the grip.
Thread the rope through the rotor
and secure it with a simple
overhand knot.

Use a screwdriver or suitable pliers
to remove the spring clip (2) from
the starter post.

Carefully remove the rope rotor with
washer (3) and pawl (4).

Coat rope rotor bearing bore with
non-resinous oil.
The rewind spring may pop out
and uncoil during this operation –
take care to reduce risk of injury.
Slip the rotor (6) with carrier (7) over
the starter post – turn it back and
forth to engage the anchor loop of
the rewind spring.
