Multi-wire sprinkler control cable is recommended for the connection of
the control valves to the sprinkler timer. This waterproof cable can be
buried directly alongside the sprinkler pipe and is available in various
sizes and number of conductors ranging from 2 to 8 color-coded wires. If
the cable run is less than 800 feet, 18-gauge wire is sufficient. For dis-
tances greater than 800 feet, 14-gauge wire is recommended. Select a
cable with at least one wire for each valve plus one wire to serve as a
return common for all valves. For future expansion of the sprinkler system,
use a cable with extra wires to accommodate additional valves.
If you have tested the valve manually and electrically and are experienc-
ing a problem, refer to the following probable causes and solutions. If the
problem cannot be resolved, the Toro Help Line is available to assist you
at 1-800-367-8676, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
(Pacific Time).
The Valve Will Not Close
FOR EMERGENCY SHUT-OFF: Turn the valve flow control fully
clockwise to shut the valve off and prevent operation.

Solenoid loose in valve body. Make sure the solenoid is turned fully
clockwise until snug. Do not over-tighten!
• Solenoid malfunction. Turn solenoid counterclockwise to remove.
Shake solenoid to check plunger movement – it must slide freely.
Flush with clean water to remove debris. Test solenoid operation elec-
trically with timer. Solenoid should “click” when energized. Replace
with a new solenoid (model #53350) if required. Make sure solenoid
O-ring is installed. Install solenoid, turning it clockwise until snug. Do
not over-tighten!

Using wire nuts, connect one wire from each valve solenoid (either
wire can be used) to the white cable wire. This wire is designated as
the valve common. Next, connect the remaining wire of each solenoid
to a separate color-coded wire. Note the wire color used for each
valve to reference when connecting to the timer. See Figure 4.
Note: Waterproof all wire splices with grease caps or similar products
to prevent corrosion, connection failure and possible short circuit.

• Debris on diaphragm seat. Referring to Figure 5, remove cap assem-
bly by turning it counterclockwise with pliers. Remove the spring. Grasp
the white plastic portion of the diaphragm assembly with needle nose
pliers and lift out. Clean the diaphragm thoroughly and check the seat
for damage. Replace with a new diaphragm (model # 53349) if neces-
sary. Install spring and cap assembly. Tighten the cap with pliers until
snug. Do not over-tighten!

Valve flow control adjusted down completely. Make sure the flow
control is open at least one complete turn (counterclockwise) from the
fully closed position.

Faulty wire connection(s). Check for loose or improper wire connec-
tions at valve and timer location. Repair as necessary.
Timer malfunction. Check timer fuse. Improper wire connections can
cause fuse to blow.

Replacing The Valve

Referring to Figure 5, unscrew the large union nut using adjustable pli-
ers. Next, separate valve halves and remove from threaded pipe
adapters. Replace PTFE tape on the adapter threads and install a new
Toro 3/4" anti-siphon valve.

Sand or debris in discharge port. Turn solenoid counterclockwise to
remove. Keep solenoid away from soil. Carefully insert a straight pin
through the discharge port to remove debris. See Figure 5.

At timer, connect white common wire to the output terminal labeled
C” or “COM”. Connect each color-coded valve wire to the numbered
terminal in the order you wish the valves to operate during a watering
cycle. Refer to the installation instructions furnished with the timer for
additional information.
The Toro Company warrants, to the owner, each new piece of equipment (featured in the current catalog at
date of installation) against defects in material and workmanship provided they are used for irrigation purposes
under manufacturer’s recommended specifications for the period described above. Product failures due to acts
of God (i.e., lightning, flooding, etc.) are not covered by this warranty.
Toro is not liable for failure of products not manufactured by Toro even though such products may be sold or
used in conjunction with Toro products.
During such warranty period, Toro will repair or replace, at its option, any part found to be defective. Toro’s
liability is limited solely to the replacement or repair of defective parts. There are no other express warranties.
Return the defective part to the place of purchase of send postage prepaid with a dated, proof of purchase to
