Remove the plug in the right reel drive cover (Fig. 50).

Back out the spring tension nut, until the washer is no
longer tensioned against the bedbar (Fig. 48).

On each side of the machine, loosen the jam nut
securing the bedbar bolt (Fig. 49).

Insert a 1/2 in. socket extension, connected to the
backlapping machine, into the square hole in the center
of the reel pulley.
Remove each bedbar bolt allowing bedbar to be pulled
downward and removed from machine. Account for 2
nylon and 2 stamped steel washers on each end of
bedbar (Fig. 49).

Backlap according to the procedure in the Toro
Sharpening Reel and Rotary Mowers Manual, Form
No. 80-300 PT.
Warning
Contact with the reels or other moving parts can
result in personal injury.
Keep fingers, hands, and clothing away from the
reels or other moving parts.

Using a short handled brush when backlapping
will cause you to come into contact with moving
parts, causing serious injury.
Assembling the Bedbar
1.
Install bedbar, positioning mounting ears between
washer and bedbar adjuster.
Only use brush handle assembly 29-9100 available
from your Authorized Toro Distributor when
backlapping.

Secure bedbar to each side plate with bedbar bolts (jam
nuts on bolts) and 8 washers. A nylon washer is to be
positioned on each side of side plate boss. Place a steel
washer outside each of the nylon washers. Torque bolts
to 240–320 in.-lb. Tighten jam nuts until thrust washers
just rotate freely.
Note: For a better cutting edge, run a file across the front
face of the bedknife when the lapping operation is
completed. This will remove any burrs or rough edges that
may have built up on the cutting edge.

Install the plug in the cover when finished.

Tighten spring tension nut until spring is collapsed, then
back off 1/2 turn.

Reel, page 15.
