Starting and Stopping the
Engine
DANGER
In certain conditions during fueling, static
electricity can be released causing a spark which
can ignite the gasoline vapors. A fire or explosion
from gasoline can burn you and others and can
damage property.
Note: For illustrations and descriptions of the controls
referenced in this section, refer to the Controls section
in Product Overview.
•
Always place gasoline containers on the ground
away from your vehicle before filling.
Starting the Engine
Note: Ensure that the spark plug wire is installed on
the spark plug.
•
Do not fill gasoline containers inside a vehicle
or on a truck or trailer bed because interior
carpets or plastic truck bed liners may insulate
the container and slow the loss of any static
charge.
1.
Ensure that the traction and reel drive levers are in
the Disengaged position.
Note: The engine will not start if the traction lever
is in the Engaged position.
•
•
When practical, remove gas-powered
equipment from the truck or trailer and refuel
the equipment with its wheels on the ground.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Open the fuel shut off valve on the engine.
Move the on/off switch to the On position.
Move the throttle control to the Fast position.
If this is not possible, then refuel such
equipment on a truck or trailer from a portable
container, rather than from a gasoline dispenser
nozzle.
Move the choke lever halfway between the On and
Off positions when starting a cold engine. The
choke may not be required when starting a warm
engine.
•
If a gasoline dispenser nozzle must be used,
keep the nozzle in contact with the rim of the
fuel tank or container opening at all times until
fueling is complete.
6.
Pull the recoil starter handle out until positive
engagement results, then pull it vigorously to start
the engine.
Checking the Interlock Switch
Operation
Important: Do not pull recoil rope to its limit
or let go of starter handle when rope is pulled
out because rope may break or recoil assembly
may be damaged.
Service Interval: Before each use or daily
CAUTION
7.
Move the choke to the Off position as the engine
warms up.
If safety interlock switches are disconnected or
damaged the machine could operate unexpectedly
causing personal injury.
Stopping the Engine
•
•
Do not tamper with the interlock switches.
1.
Move the traction and reel drive controls to the
Disengaged position, the throttle control to the
Slow position, and the On/Off switch to the Off
position.
Check the operation of the interlock switches
daily and replace any damaged switches before
operating the machine.
2.
3.
Pull the spark plug wire off of the spark plug to
prevent the possibility of accidental starting before
storing the machine.
1.
Push the kickstand down with your foot and pull
up and back on the handle to raise the wheels off
of the ground.
Close the fuel shut off valve before storing or
transporting the mower in a vehicle.
2.
3.
Place traction lever into Engage position and engine
controls in starting position.
Attempt to start engine.
Driving the Machine in
Transport
The engine should not start. If engine starts, the
interlock switch needs service. Correct problem
before operating. Refer to Servicing Interlock
Switch.
1.
Push the kick stand down with your foot and pull
up on the handle to raise the rear of mower and
install the transport wheels.
4.
Carefully lift up on handle to release kick stand.
