Clean the old gasket material from the mating
surfaces of the case and cover.
14. Remove the screw from the shift arm and remove
the shift arm, dust cover, and wear plate (Fig. 015). If
the ball bearing is to be replaced, press it out at this
time.

A hook or small screwdriver can be used to pry the
seals out of the case.
An arbor press or large vise will be needed when
removing and replacing the bushings.

Clean the oil residue and any metal shavings from
the case.

Worm and helical gears are sold as a set. Even after
a short run time, they will develop a wear pattern.
Replacing only one gear will result in rapid failure
(Fig. 014).

Remove the roll pin and pull shifter rod out of the
cover. Clean the cover.

Use bushing installation tool P/N 27-0460, to press
in new axle bushings. This tool helps keep the
bushing straight and keeps the inner diameter of the
bushing correctly sized.
