WORKMAN: Driveshaft Universal Joints
The Workman was designed as a high capacity utility
vehicle; as a result, the transaxle drive shaft splines and
universal joints are subjected to severe load and duty
cycles. If not regularly and properly lubricated at the cor-
rect maintenance interval, premature universal joint
wear may occur. It is possible that each universal joint
bearing may not receive lubrication during greasing if
the proper technique is not followed. Universal joints
with a center fitting are more susceptible to improper lu-
brication methods.
Universal Joint Lubrication
Use a hand grease gun when greasing – do not use a
pneumatic grease gun. When greasing universal joints,
make sure that all four seals are purged and the cups
are full of grease before you quit greasing. This flushes
moisture and abrasive contaminants from each bearing
assembly and ensures all four cavities are properly lu-
bricated. If you are having trouble getting a cup to purge
grease, rotate the driveshaft or move the driveshaft from
side to side. On the cup mounted design (4 grease fit-
tings), try greasing from the opposite grease fitting if a
seal will not purge.
Slip Joint Spline Lubrication
Use a hand grease gun. Apply grease to the fitting until
lubricant appears at the pressure relief hole at the upper
yoke on the drive shaft. In cold temperatures, drive the
vehicle immediately after lubricating to activate the slip
spline and purge any excess lubricant. In cold weather
the lubricant will get stiff and may cause excessive pres-
sure that could force the relief plug from the end of the
drive shaft when operated.
WORKMAN: Hitches
If you try to pull too much weight with the standard hitch,
damage to the rear axle and leaf springs can occur. Al-
ways use the heavy duty hitch in an application that ex-
ceeds the capacity of the standard hitch.
The STANDARD hitch will handle a maximum of 1500
lbs. (680 Kg) Gross Trailer Weight and a maximum of
200
lbs. (90 Kg) tongue weight.
The two HEAVY DUTY hitches will handle 3500 lbs.
Kg) Gross Trailer Weight and a maximum of 400
(1587
lbs. (180 Kg) maximum tongue weight.
