Troubleshooting
There are a number of factors that can contribute to un-
satisfactory quality of cut, some of which may be turf
conditions. Turf conditions such as excessive thatch,
“sponginess” or attempting to cut off too much grass
height may not always be overcome by adjusting the
cutting unit. It is important to remember that the lower
the height−of−cut, the more critical these factors are.
See Adjustments in the Cutting Unit Operator’s Manual
and the Service and Repairs section in this chapter of
this manual for detailed adjustment and repair informa-
tion.
For additional information regarding cutting unit trouble-
shooting, see Aftercut Appearance Troubleshooting Aid
(Toro part no. 00076SL).
Factors That Can Affect Quality of Cut
Factor
Possible Problem/Correction
Tire pressure
Check pressure of all tires. Pressure must be equal on
both front tires. Adjust pressure as necessary.
See Chapter 6 − Wheels and Brakes.
Governed engine speed
Check maximum governed engine speed. Adjust
engine to specifications if necessary.
See Maintenance section in the Traction Unit
Operator’s Manual, and/or the Briggs & Stratton Repair
Manual for 4-cycle V-Twin Cylinder OHV Head Engines
Reel speed
All reels must rotate at the same speed (within 100
rpm). All cutting units must have equal bedknife to reel
and height−of−cut adjustments. Check reel speed
setting if an optional backlap/variable reel speed kit is
installed.
See Troubleshooting in Chapter 4 − Hydraulic System
in this manual.
Reel bearing condition
Check bearings for wear and replace if necessary.
See Reel and Bearing Removal and Installation in this
chapter of this manual.
Reel and bedknife sharpness
A reel and/or bedknife that has rounded cutting edges
or “rifling” (grooved or wavy appearance) cannot be
corrected by tightening the bedknife to reel contact.
Grind reel to remove taper and/or rifling. Grind
bedknife to sharpen and/or remove rifling.
The most common cause of rifling is bedknife to reel
contact that is too tight.
A new bedknife must be ground or backlapped
after installation to the bedbar.
